Sometimes we ladies of Boca have to get away! This is how my 8 year old daughter and I felt after a rushed (and busy) month back to school this year. But with air travel off the table due to school health regulations, it has been an ongoing mission for me to find the best family (but passable) destinations to have fun and relax. Step into the newly renovated Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, Florida!
When traveling alone with my child, I tend to look to resorts where I can park my car and have fun for a few days right on the property, without needing to drive. As it turns out, the Diplomat is one of those hotels with tons of entertainment in one place: a stunning pool, beautiful beaches, and great restaurants. Currently not everything is open #AtTheDip due to the pandemic, but there is enough of it to keep everyone busy and happy for a weekend.
The Diplomat renovated its lobby and all 1,000 rooms and suites just before the pandemic, so expect to stay in a beautiful, contemporary mid-century oasis (cleaned thoroughly and professionally). Spring for an ocean view room with a private balcony if you can! It’s very spacious and has a gracious seating area, free Wi-Fi, and a large TV with Google Chromecast, which if you have kids you know is handy for streaming content. from your phone. A relaxing bathtub allows you to enjoy the sunset or, more realistically, bathe your children in sand after the pool and the beach. There is also a separate glass shower with CO Bigelow products.
Pools & Beaches
Speaking of pool and beach, The Diplomat actually has two large pools and a play area / waterslide called Dip + Slide (with a lifeguard during opening hours).
The pools are particularly unique as they are located on two different levels with the upper infinity pool having a glass oculus where swimmers can see directly down to the lower pool. We had a lot of fun with that!
Guests #AtTheDip can also book private cabanas during their stay. If you have younger children, we highly recommend that you ask for yours next to the slide, as this is where your kids will be spending most of the day, trust me! These poolside cabanas offer lounge chairs, a small SMEG fridge with bottled water, a TV, unlimited towels, Trina Turk ⢠interior furnishings, and food and beverage service from their premises. beachfront restaurant, Playa. It’s also a convenient place to escape Florida’s frequent but quick rain showers. You can even request a crib or a pack-and-play if you need it!
As for the beach, one chair per person is included in your resort fee, as is one hour of non-motorized water sports. There is something special about being able to just walk down to the beach and back up to the pool at your leisure. Plus, it really tires the kids out in time for dinner.
On our first night #AtTheDip, my daughter Avery and I splurged for dinner at Diplomat Prime, a luxury steakhouse from seasoned executive chef Rashaad Abdool. It offers dry-aged steaks as well as local and seasonal seafood dishes (Avery had the lobster mac and cheese), classic cocktails, and an extensive wine list. Their private dining options are even more impressive – take note!
For breakfast, we absolutely loved Counter Point, known for its coffee, pastries, and healthy salads and sandwiches. Wine, beer, and light snacks are also available later in the afternoon, making it a convenient place to eat (or take out) anytime of the day. You can even skip the lines by placing your order in advance directly from your room (a QR code can be found directly on the desk).
If you’re looking for a new vacation destination nearby (it’s located just 40 minutes from Boca Raton), I highly recommend adding The Diplomat Beach Resort to your shortlist. My daughter and I felt fun, well fed, relaxed and most importantly very safe due to the space and openness of the property. There really is something for every member of your family #AtTheDip.
