Laois may be Ireland’s only doubly landlocked county, but that hasn’t stopped a local couple from developing a seaside resort.

In the past week planning permission has been approved for a glamping development to include a Pond Beach Resort in Errill.

Iveta Melgaile and Patrick Bowe have been given permission to continue their plans to develop the glamping site with a pond resort at Clomeen North in Errill.

The development will include three double units, two single units, a spa treatment unit, a sauna, a barbecue hut, a sports activity area, a fire pit, an outdoor amenity area and parking. According to the couple, the wheelchair-accessible Pond Beach Resort will offer luxury self-contained rooms with pond views. Each of the five units will have its own hot tub, sitting area and front yard with BBQ area.

The resort “will be surrounded by exotic plants and palm trees as well as a white stone beach with double deck chairs and large day beds for couples.”

The resort “has been positioned so that the sun catches the beach all day from sunrise to sunset and blooms with water lilies,” they say.

The couple’s planning application continued: “Typical to this setting, visitors will enjoy watching dragonflies play and listening to spring birds, birds lodged in the woods for spring nesting; the swans and ducks have shown an interest in the pond and it is hoped they will blend in… “A large pit will provide guests with local musicians and storytellers, as well as guest sports such as basketball; Life-size chess pieces, volleyball and mini-golf will also be available. Also planned is a “Celtic wooden house, with an old-fashioned fireplace for winter evenings with storytellers and Irish music”.

Three of the five units will sleep a maximum of six people in two bedrooms, while the remaining two units will sleep two people each.

Two full-time and two part-time jobs will be created.

The couple currently operate The Ranch Cabin, a small luxury rental on the site, which they say “has proven very popular with foreign and local visitors”.

Indeed, the opinions left on their Facebook page heretestifies to this.
