Top Gun: Maverick Star Talks Training For Shirtless Beach Scene, Recalls Hilarious Moment He Heard Co-Star Glen Powell Whispering To Himself

by Tom Cruise Top Gun: Maverick absolutely killed it at the box office, and there’s a certain shirtless beach scene that may have contributed to its success. (I mean, a lot of fans are still drooling over Miles Teller and company in viral scene.) maverick Star Lewis Pullman has now shed some light on the cast’s training for the sequence, in which he was actually not so shirtless. He also recalled the moment he heard co-star Glen Powell whisper a hilarious mantra to himself.

Lewis Pullman plays Lt. “Bob” Floyd in the recently released box office hit, and his character is a bit different from the buff fighter jet pilots we see in the film. He’s a bit more reserved and honestly a bit corny. Some might have speculated that Bob’s personality may have influenced the creative decision to let the character keep his shirt on during the football game on the beach. And in an interview with American weekly, Pullman explained that this was indeed the reason why he didn’t think Floyd would take his shirt off. During the conversation, Pullman went into more detail about Bob’s state of mind regarding the scene. Here it is in his own words:

The entire cast was going through some serious impulse battles preparing for this scene. Everyone was training like crazy. I was playing Bob, who is more of a library dweller. I was like, you know, I think it’s just gonna sound a little dissonant if Bob takes his shirt off and he’s a little ripped. I also think Bob wouldn’t take his shirt off. I think that might be an uncomfortable thing for him. I think he’s a bit more of a reserved, quiet kind of guy. He kind of likes to watch how things are going before really inserting himself into a situation. And so I was one of the only people who didn’t really hit.

It is already known that Tom Cruise put the cast of Top Gun: Maverick through the wringer in preparation for their roles. Apparently though, Cruise didn’t need to encourage them to smash their ass before their shirtless beach soccer scenebecause the weight of looking good in the scene was enough pressure to force them into action.

In the same interview, Lewis Pullman recalled the time he heard Glen Powell, who plays Hangman in the film, sing something in a low voice while practicing. (You have to find your intrinsic source of motivation for things like that, right?) And it’s hard not to cringe just thinking about this saying:

I mean, I would go to the gym just for camaraderie. The infamous Glen Powell once did side flies and whispered something very intensely to himself. And I was like, ‘Glen, what are you saying?’ He was like, ‘Montage lasts forever.’

Honestly, this feels like the perfect meta-movie moment, and I’d kill for an extended version of said edit in a director’s cut. More realistically, the very real moment shows just how much pressure the stars were under to look their best in a scene that turned out to be pretty darn iconic. So congratulations to them for their commitment. Now I wouldn’t be surprised if the scene didn’t live rent-free in Superior gun the head of fans for years, just like the infamous volleyball scene from the original movie has.

In fact, a review the original Superior gun film is almost a necessity before or after watching maverick (one of the biggest new movie releases of 2022), if not for the sake of the shirtless scene, then simply for comparison. Yeah, definitely not for oiled up abs and shirtless beach scenes.
