MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina — A viral TikTok is giving unwanted attention to a hotel in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

A video of a Sea Mist Oceanfront Resort room showing mold has over 6 million views and 360,000 comments, according to ABC 15, Channel 9’s sister station in Myrtle Beach.

Kelly Bruce, who was on vacation with her two friends, shot the video. She told ABC 15 that she was placed in a new room after initially being placed in the wrong one, which then had the mold. Full mold video can be seen in The cover of ABC 15.

“We were devastated, we were sick, we thought things were crawling on us,” Bruce said.

Bruce and his friends’ first reaction to the discovery of mold was to share with the world what they were experiencing. She said she didn’t think the video would go viral, but just didn’t want anyone else to have a similar experience.

“We didn’t want anyone to see what we were seeing. No matter what you pay or your accommodation, your health, you shouldn’t be exposed to these kinds of conditions,” she said.

Bruce said the director of Sea Mist called her and said the company asked her to take down the video, according to ABC 15.

In a statement posted to social media by Sea Mist, the resort said that “guest [Bruce] was offered compensation which she refused,” ABC 15 reported.

The package the station will be willing to offer was not enough for Brown, she said.

“They would give me my money back. They would give me a three-night stay in their penthouse — in their three-bedroom penthouse like I wanted to come back — no,” Bruce said.

Bruce said she told the manager she would turn down the offer until she could speak to the company. The manager then told his company it was rescinding the offer, according to Bruce.

“She told me they were refusing the offer as well. I said ‘the offer you made me yesterday?’ She said yes.’ So she was saying they were canceling the offer they made to me. So I said ‘so you’re not refunding me?’ and she said “no, they won’t refund you”, recalls Bruce.

Bruce said all she wanted was her $700 back from the resort as she used the trip to treat her friends who helped her overcome her recent health issues.

In an email to ABC 15Sea Mist Oceanfront Resort sent the following statement:

On July 29, 2022, due to human error by the management company, a guest was assigned to a unit that was in block and under renovation. It was not meant to accommodate guests. When the guest informed the management company of this error, we offered our sincerest apologies to the guest and provided them with an upgrade to a newly refurbished Jacuzzi Suite.

Sincerely, Management company for Sea Mist Resort

In the company’s social media statement, Sea Mist also said the room needed “to be treated for mildew, which is a regular problem at all resorts in a humid climate. The unit was released by mistake and the guest was moved to a newly remodeled unit.
